Tetris Wouldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Whenever a prominent honors show approaches, there’s always a demand for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and fill the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.

My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would board games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent and important of all. The demand is this: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why movie academies avoid this approach. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, and you can find room for most games within them.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges in a particular game, intense tile-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated completely that year
  • A different innovative game missed out that year
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment recently
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're modest productions, however the design of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most popular titles globally and have been for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience rivals popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these represent titles that otherwise have no home in important events. Brain-teaser creators are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Just like film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
