The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
